Parents in Business featuring Daily Deals Blog

This week on my Parents in Business series I’m delighted to feature Claire who created and manages Daily Deals Blog. Claire’s passion is web design and saving money, and setting up this website to help people find the best deals felt like the best thing to do to work around her family.

To be honest, having read Claire’s story I’m not sure how she does it, managing a business, 5 children and a house. But hats off to her, Claire really is a superstar. If you’re feeling inspired have a read of Claire’s business story below…

Tell me a little bit about you, your background, and your business?

I’m a busy mum of 5 and my main objective was to create a business I could work around my family and that ultimately, I could do from home.

I already ran a successful web design and SEO agency but have always loved writing and had a dream of setting up a money saving blog.  Saving money comes naturally to me, as with 5 children life is costly, so I decided to combine my love of money saving with my skills as we web designer and Daily Deals UK was born.

What were your motivations for setting up your business?

It had to be something I love doing and I have always loved deal finding forums from the beginning of the internet, Martin Lawrence MSE forum was my inspiration.
Also, admittedly money! Although my web design company was enough, I wanted to be truly successful and have a legacy to leave my children.

How do you balance the business around your family and childcare?

It was hard at first because when I first set up Daily Deals UK which was my second online company, I was pregnant with twins.  Once they arrived (as you can imagine) life got seriously hectic! I was bed bound during pregnancy due to many complications, which then gave me the time to get it all completely set up before their arrival, and after their arrival I just worked when I could.
When they slept, I worked, then when my husband came in from work, he took over and I did the chores, homework, cooking, cleaning etc, then I used to work in the evening until I dropped. I felt a lot of guilt in the first two years due to the fact that I was stretched so thinly.
My kids were 20, 13, 9 and newborn, they all have different needs and the housework was never ending.  The twins fed every three hours for the first 18 months and my partner and I were like zombies.  It’s a little easier these days with them now being 3, they sleep all night and are in nursery until lunch time.  Although, I still work until midnight most evenings.

Since setting up your business what has been your biggest success to date?

Definitely surviving the first two years! Working from home running two companies with twins was absolutely exhausting. I badly broke my wrist when they were 8 weeks old, which resulted in surgery with plates and pins, so I had to do it all one handed for almost two months!

What’s your top tip for anyone who is thinking about setting up their own business?

Go for it!! Seriously, although it was hard for me, I stuck to it and I am SO happy I did.
I’m not the type of person who plays well with others so for me it was a no brainer to become a CEO. The part is being able to enjoy the summer holidays/Christmas etc with the children and not having to ask anyone for time off.
Thank you so much Claire for being part of my series, it has been an absolute pleasure to feature you on my blog.
