This week for my Parents in Business series I’m excited to be featuring Amy who created Amy Merrywest Consulting. Amy has worked for big and small PR agencies, and has used that experience and knowledge to create her own PR business to support entrepreneurial mums. Her approach is simple…..plan well, and her top tips are vital during times like these which include planning and never giving up.

Tell me a little bit about you, your background, and your business?

I am Amy and I’m from Amy Merrywest Consulting. I help entrepreneurial mums to create and implement their own PR and social media plans. I have big and small agency PR experience, as well as freelance and I have handled big profile clients, right down to small niche brands.

What were your motivations for setting up your business?

Having worked for agencies as a PR professional and as an entrepreneur who strategises her own PR, I understand the process from both sides. I can say with confidence, that with help and guidance anyone can create a really successful PR plan.

As a brand owner, you have the passion and understanding that nobody else can have – you’re the best person for the job. Not to mention you can save yourself a fortune by doing it yourself!

How do you balance the business around your family and childcare?

This is tricky but it’s all in the planning and it’s the very reason I teach my ladies to plan WELL.

I work school hours and I ensure that I prioritise my workload into those hours only and I don’t take on any more.

Since setting up your business what’s been your biggest success to date?

Seeing my clients get the results that they really want – particularly coverage that pushes their sales through the roof and makes it all worthwhile!

What are your top tip for anyone who is thinking about setting up their own business?

To plan, plan and then plan some more!

A plan does not need to be concrete but it should reflect what you want to achieve to a rough timescale over the next six months to a year.

Also – don’t give up. Your business needs a good PR and social media pan and this will help your brand gain momentum. But it takes time and it’s easy to give up before it really starts to progress.
