House Renovation Highlights featuring That 1960s House
Hi all! This week on my House Renovation Highlights series I’m delighted to be featuring Jenny who has pretty much rebuilt her entire 1960s house. You can see more on her Instagram (but stay here for now), the works that they have completed include a single storey extension at the front and a double storey extension to the rear. I loved seeing the picture below drop into my inbox showing the back of house removed and being able to see all the internal bones from the outside.
The project started at the beginning of the second lockdown in November, and despite these challenges Jenny also relocated 45 minutes away from the property with her two young boys. I can understand that this must have been a huge challenge, and Jenny you are superwomen for doing this and still have the patience to do more.
I would love for you to have a read of Jenny’s story about how she’s rebuilt her home, including designing a bespoke sofa to fit the space. Also please do go and see the very latest from Jenny’s renovation story over on her Instagram – because the renovations really never stop!
Tell us about your home and your renovation project. What did you do?
Complete refurbishment of the existing house, with a single storey extension at the front and a double storey at thje rear. Including structural alterations internally, changing the layout upstairs creating 5 bedrooms and an en-suite.
What did you enjoy the most about your house renovation?
Seeing our vision unlock throughout the course of the refurbishment.
What was your biggest challenge?
Our biggest challenge wasn’t necessarily the build but managing our lives around the renovation. We completed and started the renovations the day the country went into the 2nd lockdown on the 5th November. So renovating the house during the winter lockdowns, living 45 minutes away from the property with two young boys and both working.
Is there anything that you would have done differently?
Currently no, we’re both really happy with the way the house is coming together knowing all our hard work has paid off. We aren’t at all finished but with what we have done, we wouldn’t have changed much at all.
Tell us your top tips?
1) To produce a detailed cost plan and protect contingency. There’s always something that crops up unexpectedly!
2) To follow your vision of how you want your home.
3) Be patient and expect you might not be able to finish it all at once.
What was your best renovation purchase?
Our best renovation purchase was going for a bespoke sofa through our living room designer Millie Turner. We’d have never thought about having a sofa made, but Millie gave us the suggestion and it was the best decision, as nothing we could find online would fit the room as well as the sofa does. It’s a big purchase, but it’s long lasting and, after the renovation evening work is no longer needed, it’s a good place to sit and reflect on all your work.
Would you do it again?
Yes, we’d absolutely do it again. Maybe not for a while, we love the move to Bath from Bristol and our son starts school in September. So we’d love to establish ourselves in the house and the area for now.
What’s next? Any future renovation plans?
We hope to live in our house for many years while our boys are at school. We still have some of the rooms to complete but the next big project will be the garden.
Thank you so much Jennifer for sharing your story with us, and I have loved seeing the rebuild of your home. Good luck with completion of the remaining rooms and the garden.
