Parents in Business featuring Boiler Central

This week on my Parents in Business series I’m delighted to feature James who set-up his own business, Boiler Central, which is really useful for nearly all home owners to make the process of buying and looking after your boiler so much easier, it’s great to have a starting point!

I have loved reading James’s story. Often my businesses I feature on here are female run, which is great, and this time it’s really interesting hearing about James’s businesses from a male persective, and how he commits to it and manages family life around it.

Do have a read of James’s story, his top tips are really valuable and encouraging for any future entrepreneurs and I love his motto of just going for it, which is something that I firmly believe in.

Tell me a little bit about you, your background, and your business?

Boiler Central was launched to make the process of buying a boiler trusted and simple. In just 20 seconds, you can answer a series of questions about your home and are shown a choice of boilers that meet the needs of your family and home.

With a background in retail sales and marketing, I wanted to create a brand and a business that makes it easy for hardworking people to make a home improvement purchase online.

What motivated you to set up your own business?

Family comes first. The dream was to be able to provide for my family and also have the freedom and time to enjoy seeing my children grow and develop. By creating my own business, it’s given us the flexibility and balance needed to make home and work life rewarding.

This has never been more apparent than in recent months, where running my own business has given my wife and I the flexibility to home school and keep the wheels of the business in motion.

How do you balance or juggle your business around family commitments?

It’s tough at times to balance the two and I find that the workday stops and starts to cater to family commitments. I usually go and play with the children in the garden when they get home from school, which sometimes leads to starting work again in the evenings, when they’re in bed. This has never been an issue and is much more appealing than missing those moments with the children.

What do you view as your biggest success since setting up your business?

Freedom is definitely the biggest success. It is hard work but well worth it. I enjoy having the ability to work when we’re at home with our family or even when they are on holiday.

What are your top tips for anyone who is thinking about setting up their own business?

Just go for it! Have the courage to believe in yourself. Nothing at work will be harder than raising a child, so you’re already prepared for the hard work, sleepless nights, late deadlines and juggling multiple priorities at once.

But also, it’s nice to be able to share your passion and work ethic with your children, letting them see what goes into each day sets them on the right path.

So many children don’t see what their parents do for a living, but by running your own business, it’s inevitable that they’ll be more interested and more engaged in what you are doing.

Thank you so much James for taking part in my series, it has been great to feature you and I wish you all the best in the future.
