Mums in Business featuring Write My Name

I am so excited to be back this week featuring another Mum in Business, last week I featured Abby from Love Your Birth and I was thrilled with the response especially on Facebook. I am massive advocate of Mums who choose a different career path after having children for whatever reasons, and who set-up their own business. It’s not always an easy decision to make, and often accompanied with long hours, but in the end the reward can be huge, be that spending more time with your children or overall happiness.

This week I am featuring Natasha from Write My Name who set-up her own business to help support children learn and practice how to write their name.

Tell us a little bit about you, your background and Write My Name?

I am Natasha, mum of 2 young children, Zariah and Zachary, I have an English degree with a professional accountancy qualification. I have many years as a professional accountant behind me but I always wanted my own business, as I was fascinated by the machinations of it. I started out while on my second maternity leave with a keepsake business which was a great success but I found it took me away from my family too much. The balance was wrong.

What were your drivers and motivations for setting up Write My Name?

Whilst I was trying to work out a way to make it work my 3 year old daughter asked me to help her write her name. I looked everywhere online for guidance and couldn’t find anything suitable. I created my own version and then realised other mum‘s might need it too. Write My Name was born.

The business started off as a download and after a lot of work is now not just the download but also a wipe clean personalised workbook and gift box. The idea is to give back time and remove parents fear of doing it wrong. With an unusual name like Zariah there was no off the shelf option and with the modern trend of unusual names and spellings I wanted to create a completely personalised workbook with the exact spelling and their photograph featured throughout.

How do you balance Love Your Birth around your family life?

Now that the website is fully automated with orders going directly to the printers my main focus is working on the business and the community.  A much more manageable and scaleable scenario with the family.

What’s been your biggest success to date?

My biggest success, aside from the acceptance into the competition has been the fact that my daughter loves her workbook and her special pen – she was very upset that someone else touched it at preschool. She really loves it and knows it belongs to her. Of course finding a method of creating a printed version and all the technical work in the background is fantastic, but at the end of the day I made the workbook for her and seeing her use it and learn is my biggest achievement.

Lastly what’s your top tip for anyone who’s thinking about setting up their own business?

My top tip for anyone who is thinking about setting up their business is to believe in yourself. Only you can see the technicolor version of your dream and no matter what anyone else says you should stay true to that vision.

Loved reading this, Claire. Takes belief in yourself to push forward in business, and in life. Ironically, growing up, I hated having to write my name, because its 8 whole letters. thats why we gave our little one a short name, so she doesn’t have to struggle as much as I did.
