Home Renovation Mistakes You Don’t Want to Make
Renovating your home is something you will need to do from time to time if you want to improve your property’s form and function, but doing so can be very stressful, and there are so many things that can go wrong, that it is not unusual to feel apprehensive about the process.
That is why, I have put together a list of some of the most common home renovation mistakes, in the hopes that it will help you to avoid them, and ensure that your next renovation project goes as smoothly as your silk sheets.
Not putting your stuff into storage
If you are going to be renovating a room, then you should really think about putting the content of that room into storage. Furniture storage is very reasonably priced and it will help to prevent your favourite pieces from being scuffed or splattered in paint while renovations take place. If you take nothing else from this post, let it be this.
Choosing the first professional you find
Whether you need a builder or a painter and decorator, if you simply go with the first person you find on Google, chances are you will be making a mistake. It is vital. If you want to spend as little as possible, and get the highest quality of finish to your property as possible, you get at least three quotes, and ideally, that you get a recommendation from someone you trust. There were a lot of cowboys out there, and if you do not do your due diligence, you are likely to find yourself wrangling with one.
Not putting a plan in place
It is really important that you plan for any renovation projects and schedule them for a time that is most likely to work for you all. For example, if you are having building work done, then scheduling for summer when the weather is likely to be fine and have little impact on the works, and when you and the family can take some time away from the house so you don’t get fed up of builders working around you all the time, is sensible. Look at your diary and plan works for the best possible time for you all and you will have a much easier time of it.
Doing too much yourself
There is nothing wrong with DIY. If you are handy, then doing various home renovations, like redecorating or installing new light fixtures may be sensible as it will save you money and allow you to do things in your own time, but if you try to do too much, and you try to attempt aspects of DIY that you are not familiar with, you could end up drilling into electrical wires or knocking down important walls, and even worse injure yourself. So know your limits.
If you can avoid making any of these common home renovation mistakes, then you will be able to get your home just how you want it to be without all of the stress and upheaval, not to mention unexpected expenses, that renovations often cause.
