Our trip to Folly Farm

Every year we always spend a week in Wales, spending half the week in North Wales near Abersoch and the rest of the week in South Wales near Tenby. We’ve recently been on our holiday to Wales, and we loved it. It’s great taking our daughter to places that both myself and my husband visited when we were younger, and as she gets older we can take her to more and more places. On this trip we were really excited to be visiting Folly Farm near Tenby in Pembrokeshire.

I first visited Folly Farm when I was younger, probably about 25 years ago, and all I can remember is feeding sheep. I can say now that it is very different to what I remember, so here’s our review of Folly Farm.

Our trip to Folly Farm

We visited Folly Farm on a Wednesday so it was fairly quiet, and parked in the car park. Getting to the farm is really easy, as it’s just off the main road and only a short walk from the car park. Our daughter was so excited once we had made it through the ticket barriers, as you walk straight through the shop. I think that she wanted everything. We quickly herded her out and headed to our first destination; The Jolly Barn.

I think that this is the part of the farm I remember from my childhood, although it is very different now. The barn is huge and really well set up with different areas and themes for each animal. We saw lambs, donkeys, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens and turkeys here. We managed to see and touch the guinea pigs and rabbits, once our daughter became a little braver, and she loved seeing the guinea pigs running around and hiding in their pen.

Next up we took a walk to Percy’s piggery, and saw the biggest pigs that I had ever seen. They were huge and asleep. If we had been at feeding time it would have been pretty interesting. The piggery is next to the land train which is across the road from the farm. But Folly Farm have it covered, you just walk through a tunnel under the road to get there.

We really enjoyed our trip on the land train around the fields of the farm. We learnt that the animals are rotated between the farm and the fields, which is great so that they are not always on show to the public. On the train we saw deer, shire horses, llamas and alpaca, and I realised just how big the Folly Farm estate actually is.

After the land train it was the time for lunch. We ate at the main restaurant in the Victorian Vintage Funfair. The food was good, it is your standard food of fish and chips, and sausage and chips etc, and there are meal deals available for children.

The vintage funfair is so impressive, and I wished that our daughter was a little older so that she could enjoy the rides. There was a ghost train, merry-go-rounds, dodgems, you name it, it was there. Not only this, but there was old style arcade machines. Have a gander at the pictures below.

The next part of Folly Farm is the zoo, and I was really impressed with this. We saw so many different animals from lions to penguins to rhinos. We loved how close we go to the lions, although they were behind glass, the lions walked right past us, and we had such good views. I was also really impressed with the rhinos, it was actually quite weird to see rhinos in Wales, and just like the lions we had such a good view.

We must have spent a couple of hours walking round the zoo seeing all the animals, and finishing our day watching the giraffes and zebras being fed. Before leaving the park we enjoyed a tasty hot chocolate, baby chino and cake in the Cwtch Cafe, which was a welcome break after lots of walking.

Our last stop before we left for the car was to visit the shop. The shop has everything a child could dream of. There are cuddly toys of all the animals at Folly Farm, books, toys, clothes and sweets. We were quite reserved with our purchases, and bought a toy train set, some fudge for Mum and Dad, and a pot of pick and mix sweets for me.

Overall we were so impressed with Folly Farm, it is so much more than I remember it to be. The farm caters for children of all ages, not just children but adults too. There is large pirate ship based play park, and mini tractors for children to ride on. It is also buggy friendly throughout, and we had no problem navigating our Bugaboo around. So if you live nearby, or visiting Pembrokeshire, Tenby or Bluestone I would definitely recommend you take a visit to Folly Farm. It’s ace!

We were gifted two adults tickets to Folly Farm in exchange for this review.

As a signing off quote, here’s a little caption on a mural I found during our visit.
