10 Child Friendly Date Ideas in London

Being a parent it is super difficult to go on a date with your husband or partner. There is so little time, or you can only go out separately whilst the other one looks after your child. This is the case for us, and I’m sure many other parents. In fact I think I can count on one hand the amount of times that my husband and I have been out together without our daughter.

I’ve started to look at this in another way, and now that she’s a little older it is possible to go on a date, and bring our daughter along with us. That way we still have the date, but without the worry of someone looking after her. So here are 10 child friendly date ideas in London avoiding soft play and Peppa Pig.

Tate Modern

Having worked behind the Tate Modern for 10 years, I’ve been very few times. There is generally always something on in the Turbine Hall, and a featured artist on display. The Tate Modern is huge, so there is so much to see on your date, and your child can run around in the Turbine Hall. Also you can enjoy a really nice meal in the cafe or in the 10th floor restaurant with 360 degree views over London

Greenwich Park

If you’ve not been to Greenwich then you need to go.  We used to live there, and loved it. It’s a lovely little part of London with a huge park that has fabulous views over London and Canary Wharf. The park is perfect for an afternoon or early evening stroll especially as the sun is setting. Plus there is so much space and a large play park for your child to run around in.

London Zoo

This is such a good place to bring out the big kid in you. I love looking at animals and seeing them close up, as it’s not something we see very often. There is so much to see at the zoo from lions, to gorillas, to monkeys. We recently had a fantastic day out at London Zoo together, and our daughter loved it too. There’s also a street food type area for food and drinks, so you can enjoy a relaxing beer together at the end of the day.

Sea Life Centre

Just like London Zoo, the Sea Life Centre is not just for kids. Adults love them too, as it’s fascinating seeing huge fish and sharks close up. Hopefully your child will be mesmerised by the lights and coloured fish, so you can have some adult time together without constantly trying to entertained children.

Theatre Matinee

Most of the shows running in London offer a matinee show, plus they tend to be slightly cheaper than the evening performances. So take advantage of this, and go on a date to a matinee performance with your child. Some of the child friendly shows are Lion King and Aladdin, but as adults we love them too.

Pedalo on the Serpentine at Hyde Park

This is a brilliant way to relax with your loved one and see the sights of Hype Park. The serpentine is huge so there’s plenty of exploring to do whilst on your pedalo, or just pedalo around the lake and chill out hopefully under a sun drenched sky. Hopefully your child will be fascinated by the ducks and other pedalo’s. Plus it’s free for the under 4s.

Thames Boat Trip

There are so many boat cruises that run up and down the Thames letting you enjoy and see all the sights of London, and some allow you to hop on and off. Most boat cruises include Westminster, Bankside, London Eye, Tower Bridge and Greenwich. If your child is anything like mine, they will just love being on a boat, whilst you take in the London skyline.

Orbit in the Olympic Park

The Olympic Park is a brilliant place to take children, but also for you to go on a wander. Head up the Orbit to take in the views of London and the Olympic Park where you can either take the stairs or the lift to the top. If you fancy being a big kid, you can take the world’s longest tunnel slide back down. And, if your child is over 8 years old then can join you on this slide too.

Street Feast

We love Street Feast, especially Hawker House at Canada Water. On Saturday it is open from midday, making it perfect to go on a date together, and bring your kids. There are so many street food vans here ranging from burgers, to thai, and to korean. Plus bars serving your favourite cocktails. Whilst you relax with your food and drink, your children can play on the trampolines and in the sandpits.

Eltham Palace

This is a stunning art deco house in South East London that is owned by Engligh Heritage. You are free to walk around the house taking in the eclectic styles of the rooms. Then once you’ve explored the house there are over 19 acres of gardens to explore, including a moat and a large rock garden. If your children need a break and to let off some steam, then there’s a play area for them to explore.
