Mums in Business featuring Amicable

This week on my Mums in Business series I’m delighted to be featuring Kate; one of the co-founders of amicable who set up the business after going through a traumatic divorce, and wanted to help people who were also experiencing challenging times themselves. This story tells of Kate’s passion for supporting people, and hearing her own children talk about her business is one of her biggest achievements to date. Read on to find out more about Kate’s inspiring story and her top tips for setting up a business.

Tell me a little bit about you, your background and amicable?

My name is Kate Daly, I’m Co-Founder of a legal tech called amicable. amicable exists to help separating couples achieve better outcomes for their families. Too many families emerge from divorce damaged and scarred. We can’t prevent divorce, but we think it is a sad event not a bad event, with the focus being on people being able to move on successfully with their lives.

What were your drivers and motivations for setting up amicable?

I went through my own divorce which was pretty traumatic. Through my career I helped many other people who had a similar negative experience and knew that there must be a better way to help them.

How do you balance the business around family and childcare?

It’s like spinning plates, it’s tough because there are sacrifices. I try and hold on to the key important things that I need to be around for my kids and I create time with them in the day.

Since setting up the business what’s been your biggest success to date?

There are two moments. One is when customers thank us and get quite emotional. It makes all the hard work worth it when you can see that you’ve done a good thing for a couple or a family, and you’ve saved them from a spiral of trauma.

The other times that I’m proud of is when my kids talk about the business, I hear them say ‘my mum wants to help people so she can make the world a better place.’

What’s your top tip for Mums who are thinking about setting up their own business?

I have three tips:

  1. Research your idea. I was able to earn a living whilst testing the concept of amicable, but be prepared it takes a long time.
  2. Don’t try and do it on your own, nobody’s an island.
  3. Just start. Don’t over think it, just start, experience it and then change your arrangements to fit.
