Allergic to Mould? Here’s How to Minimise It

If you are trying to look after yourself better, especially during cold and flu season, it is important to look at your immediate home environment as well as what is outside. If you feel that you are constantly sniffly, it can be so frustrating and can make you feel miserable. But this is where we need to find little approaches to reduce our allergies in the home. One of the key things that can very likely impact you without you knowing it is mould. If you are living in a humid environment or the home isn’t well insulated, it could very well be a breeding ground for mould. But what can you do if you have an allergy to mould, whether you are inside or outside the house?

Take the Moisture Out of the Air

If you use a humidity monitor, you stand a better chance of understanding just how humid your home is. If you reduce the moisture in your home, you make it less mould friendly. This is crucial to controlling how much mould you have in your home. Humidity needs to be below 60% and ideally between 35% and 50%. Once you know how much moisture you have in the air and you take active steps to reduce it, you should see the difference.

Think About Where You Are Going

It’s likely the mould will thrive in certain types of stores, such as flower shops or greenhouses. You should also know what to avoid. When you are outdoors during the autumn months, damp leaves are a breeding ground for mould. And while it’s not fun to stay indoors, as long as you are aware that you can get mould transference onto your shoes after walking through damp leaves or uncut fields, you can clean your shoes upon entering the home. At the very least putting them on top of the radiator so they can dry properly will kill the mould. If you need to go out to these places, you’ve got to be prepared. You could take a dust mask or purchase some over-the-counter allergy medication to minimise any symptoms.

Be Vigilant

If you constantly feel like you are snivelling and mould is the culprit, you’ve got to find ways to limit your exposure. One of the best things for you to do is to pay attention to outdoor spore levels and know when you need to stay indoors.

Make Sure Your Home Is Clean

It sounds obvious, but mould can thrive in humid spaces, which also means that it can flourish in areas that have slight soap scum or grease. Keeping your home clean is essential. When you are in the kitchen, you need to look for signs of mould in areas such as the refrigerator, especially in the seals of the door and the refrigerator drip pan.

While mould is is something that can make our lives miserable, if we have a mild or major allergy to it, rest assured, there are ways to get around it.
