Parents in Business featuring Parents in Biz

This week I’m delighted to introduce Bridget who created Parents in Biz, which I think is quite fitting to be part of my Parents in Business this week. Bridget helps to support parents managing their own businesses whilst also juggling family life. Since starting the business Bridget has has many successes including launching her own magazine and featuring over 100 parents on her platform.

Bridget’s top tips are spot on. There is also something else to learn when you set up your own business and it’s ok to accept help if you need it! To learn more about Bridget’s business and how it can help you, read on…

Tell me a little bit about you, your background, and your business?

Hi, my name is Bridget Daley, and I’m the founder of Parents in Biz and the Editor of the Parents in Business Magazine. I have 5 children aged 26, 24, 21, 15 and 8.  My career background is in social care, and I’m a qualified counsellor. I have over 10 years’ experience of being in business so I’m no stranger to wearing multiple hats while juggling family and business life.

The Parents in Biz platform exists to support and empower parents to manage the tightrope of growing a business and having harmony at home.

What were your motivations for setting up your business?

The primary motivation for me in setting up my businesses was for flexibility around my family. Throughout my business journey, my children have gone through all the stages of child development baby, toddler, pre-schooler, school age, teenagers, and young adulthood.  I founded Parents in Biz in 2017, so I could work with and support parents who were wanting to grow their business and have harmony at home.

How do you balance the business around your family and childcare?

Now my children are older I have better work/life balance although this sometimes goes out of sync. My youngest goes to after-school club on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I have long working hours on those days. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday once I do the school run working on the business stops until in the night when my younger children have gone to bed. I try to not work on the weekends I like to leave that time for quality family time and self-care.

Since setting up your business what has been your biggest success to date?

  1. The launch of the Parents in Business Magazine I’m pleased with how it’s been received. When I launched the Parents in Business Magazine last year, I was unsure how the audience would receive it. Parents love it, and I love when I receive emails and messages from people who have discovered the magazine and let me know that they have found it useful and enjoy reading it.
  2. I have interviewed over 100 parents, and I’m happy that I have created a platform that gives small business owners exposure each business journey is inspiring. I enjoy hearing about how parents came up with their business ideas and the challenges that they have overcome.
  3. The work 1-2-1 work I do with parents it’s really wonderful to see parents move forward start and grow their business.

What’s your top tip for anyone who is thinking about setting up their own business?

  1. Keep learning and have a growth mindset. When you launch your first business you think it’s the greatest thing in the whole world and you want it to succeed so much it’s so easy to give up or become disheartened when you hit your first bump in the road. By continuing to learn and by having a growth mindset, this will help you overcome many of the challenges that being a business owner throws at you.
  2. Never be afraid to ask for help, don’t be ashamed build a support network of people who believe in you and what you want to do. When you start up in business, your support network will be there to support you on the low days they will be there to cheer you on when you have wins.
  3. Carrying out due diligence on any person and company that you plan to work with failing to do this can be costly not only financially but also mentally.
Thank you so much Bridget for letting me feature you and Parents in Biz as part of my weekly series! I wish you all the best for the future.
