Mums in Business featuring Love Your Birth

I am super excited to be kicking off a new series today called Mums in Business. You might have guessed from some previous posts of mine that I am massive of advocate of Mums who choose a different career path after having children for whatever reasons, and who set-up their own business. It’s not always an easy decision to make, and often accompanied with long hours, but in the end the reward can be huge, be that spending more time with your children or overall happiness.

To start the series in style I am featuring today Abby from Love Your Birth who set-up her own Hypnobirthing business after realising her own fears of childbirth.

Tell us a little bit about you, your background and what your business is?

I’m 32 and live with my husband and 3 small children in West Yorkshire. I’m a former Secondary School teacher and now run a successful Hypnobirthing business in West Yorkshire. I am in my third year of Hypnobirthing and am proud to have supported over 100 couples in their transition to becoming parents.

My business is called Love Your Birth and I run group and private Hypnobirthing classes in West Yorkshire. Hypnobirthing is a birth preparation course allowing couples to release fear and gain tools and techniques for an easier birth.

I’m really excited to now be offering lots of other courses to my services such as a Beyond Birth course and Pregnancy Relaxation mornings.

What were your drivers and motivations for setting up Love Your Birth?

When I was pregnant with my first baby; my son Harris, I was petrified of giving birth. It stole the joy from the pregnancy. Luckily I found Hypnobirthing and it changed everything. I went from fearful to excited! I felt like I had lots of choices and that birth didn’t have to be as bad as all the stories I’d heard. And it wasn’t! It was incredible and left me feeling like Wonder Woman.

I knew a lot of what I’d experienced in my birth was down to the Hypnobirthing tools we had and the positive mindset I’d gone in with, and I knew there and then that I wanted to share this with other women.

I briefly went back to Secondary School teaching but my heart wasn’t in it. I felt that despite being part time I was stressed and wasn’t ‘present’ on my days off as the work load was massive. I dreaded my working days and leaving him in a nursery, I didn’t want to live like that. So I made the decision to leave my job knowing that I wanted to train to teach Hypnobirthing. I waited just over a year as I was pregnant with my second baby and did my training when she was six months old.

I knew leaving my kids to do something I loved and felt passionate about would be an entirely different ball game. I also knew that being self employed would allow me to pick and choose when I’d like to work, which would fit around my family.

Most couples want to do a course on an evening or weekend which would fit perfectly with me being able to spend time with my children.

How do you balance Love Your Birth around your family life?

Getting the balance is so difficult. Can we ever get this right? Is there even such a thing?

My ‘In person work’, teaching my classes mostly happens on an evening when the kids are in bed or at the weekend when they have a daddy day. Fitting the other stuff – marketing, planning, admin etc is hard. I do sometimes find that I’m juggling looking after the kids whilst responding to emails and I battle the guilt with that one.  We are looking into getting more childcare so that I can have dedicated ‘work days’ and therefore the time I’m with the kids I’m more ‘present’. I definitely think this is the way forward with my business growing.

What’s been your biggest success to date?

My biggest success is that this year I have had consistently full Hypnobirthing group courses weeks in advance.

Lastly what’s your top tip for anyone who’s thinking about setting up their own business?

Do it! If you have an idea that lights you up you have the edge, you’ll make it work.

Some people worry about the competition when just starting out. Avoid spending too much time looking at them and seeing what they are doing. Instead focus on what makes your business unique and special and focus on that. We all have something individual to share with the world.
